The Ads That Lasted Longest Opened With a Question: A UGC Playbook for New York Brands
Most UGC video ads open with the brand: a slogan, a logo, or “Introducing the new…”. The person scrolling already has a question in their head. In a market as crowded as New York, answering it in the first three seconds can decide whether your ad gets watched or skipped.
What the study found
UGC agency She Converts analyzed 8,107 ads from 120 advertisers in the Meta Ad Library. The key results:
- 94% of ads that opened by answering a common question were still running at 90 days. Offer-led openers followed at 83%, and personal-story openers at 80%.
- 70% of ads still running after 90+ days are video.
- 46% of long-running video ads feature a person talking to camera.
- Ads with no spoken hook did worst, at 22%.
Why a question beats a slogan
A slogan talks about you, while a question talks about the viewer. When people hear the exact words they would type into Google, the ad feels made for them.
| Brand slogan | Customer question |
|---|---|
| “Radiance, redefined.” | “Does vitamin C serum actually fade dark spots?” |
| “New York’s #1 fitness studio.” | “How often do you really need to train?” |
| “Your dream home awaits.” | “Can I afford to buy in Brooklyn on one income?” |
How to build the opener
- Collect real questions. Pull them from Instagram and TikTok comments, DMs, support emails, reviews and sales calls. Include NYC-specific ones about delivery zones, neighborhoods and pricing.
- Pick buying-intent questions. “Will this work for sensitive skin?” beats a vague curiosity question.
- Say it in the first 3 seconds, and caption it. The creator speaks the question straight to camera, with the same text on screen for viewers watching on mute.
- Answer, prove, ask. A simple structure (general best practice, not from the study): question, then a direct answer, then proof such as a demo or a real customer, then one call to action. Don’t cut the ad short, since the median length was 38 seconds for ads running 90+ days, against 33 seconds for ads under 30 days.
- Test several openers. Keep the body of the ad identical, swap only the question, and keep the winner.
Why it matters in New York
Brands across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island compete for the same audiences, so a generic opener gets lost. Examples (replace with your own customers’ questions):
- Beauty and fashion: “Will this shade work for deeper skin tones?”
- Restaurants: “Is it hard to get a table on a Friday night?”
- Real estate: “How much do I need saved to buy in NYC?”
- Coaching and local services: “How soon will I see results?”
The study found coaching and info brands (55%) and local services (51%) kept far more video ads running past 90 days than ecommerce brands (18%), and many NYC businesses fall into those groups.

FAQ
What is a FAQ-style hook? An opener where the creator asks and answers a question customers really ask, instead of opening with a slogan or logo.
Does it work for New York businesses? The study is US-wide, not NYC-specific, so confirm it with your own tests.
How long should the ad be? Long-running ads had a median of 38 seconds. Give the answer the time it needs, but make the first 3 seconds count.
Should the question be spoken or on-screen? Both. A spoken hook performed far better than none, and the caption covers viewers watching on mute.
