Most app teams judge Meta campaigns on cost per install. It is a useful number, but it is also the easiest one to fool. You can halve your install cost overnight by buying people who never open the app. This guide walks through the setup we use to lower install costs while protecting the users who pay.
1. Choose the right optimization event
An install tells the algorithm almost nothing about who becomes a customer. If your app has a trial, a subscription or a first purchase, optimize for that event instead and let Meta find people who act.
- Send events from your MMP, not only from the pixel or SDK defaults.
- Pass a value with every purchase so value-based bidding has something to learn from.
- Aim for roughly 50 optimization events per ad set each week, so campaigns can leave the learning phase.
When installs still make sense
Very new apps without a paying funnel can start on installs for two or three weeks to collect data. Move to a deeper event as soon as you have enough volume.
Cheap installs that never open the app are the most expensive installs you will ever buy.

2. Build creative for the first three seconds
On Meta, creative is targeting. The first three seconds decide whether people stop scrolling, and that decides how much you pay for delivery.
- Show the product in use, not a logo animation.
- Name the problem your app solves in the first line.
- End with one clear action, such as “Start your free trial”.
Test several hooks on the same concept before you change anything else. A better hook often lowers cost per install more than any bid change.
3. Keep the account structure simple
Too many small ad sets split your budget and slow learning. Fewer, broader ad sets with more creative inside each one usually perform better and are easier to read.
4. Scale what pays back
Move budget every week toward the ad sets with the best cost per paying user, not the cheapest installs. Review results by cohort so you can see which week of spend actually paid back.
